A Glow-in-the-Dark Date Night: The Baltimore Lantern Parade
The Baltimore Lantern Parade turns Patterson Park into a sea of glowing color every October, and it might be the most quietly romantic night the city throws all year. There is no ticket to buy and no dress code beyond a lantern in hand, just a whole neighborhood walking through the dark together.
What Happens at the Baltimore Lantern Parade
On Saturday, October 24, the Great Baltimore Lantern Parade & Dia de los Muertos Festival takes over the Pulaski Monument at Patterson Park, about a 10 to 15 minute drive from the Inner Harbor. The free event is produced by Creative Alliance and Friends of Patterson Park and has been a Baltimore tradition for more than 20 years.
The day starts early with a festival at 4 p.m., featuring a kids costume contest, lantern making, pop up performances, and an arts and crafts market with food trucks scattered across the lawn. Once the sun goes down, the mood shifts. At 7 p.m. the parade begins, and everyone who showed up with a lantern (homemade or picked up on site) joins a slow march through the park behind musicians, puppeteers, and neighbors carrying their own glowing creations.
Why Couples Love this Glow in the Dark Baltimore Festival
There is something about walking through a dark park lit only by paper lanterns and string lights that makes conversation easier. It is not a loud concert or a crowded bar, just a slow, glowing walk. Couples who want to make their own lantern can join one of Creative Alliance's workshops held throughout October, or simply grab a spot along the route and let the parade come to them.
If the season already has you in a spooky mood, pair the parade with a stop on one of Baltimore's haunted pub crawls or ghost tours earlier in the evening.
Make a Weekend in Baltimore of It
Patterson Park sits between Canton, Fell's Point, and Highlandtown, so it is easy to build a full evening around the parade. Grab dinner in Fell's Point beforehand, walk over for the festival and parade, then wind down with a nightcap somewhere quiet once the crowds start to thin.
Stay at Rachael's Inner Harbor Boutique Inn and you are close enough to make the trip out to Patterson Park without giving up the walkable, historic charm of downtown Baltimore. Come back after the lanterns go dark and let the rest of your Baltimore's Lantern Parade weekend unfold at a slower pace.
